The raw fight between life and hope

On July 17, 1967, a single photograph captured what words could never fully express
— the raw fight between life and hope, and the courage of one man refusing to let his friend go.
That day, lineman Randall Champion accidentally touched a high-voltage line , his heart stopping instantly as his body hung from a utility pole. Below, his coworkers froze in shock. But fellow lineman J.D. Thompson didn’t hesitate. He climbed the pole, steadied himself, and began giving air to his friend — suspended high above the ground, determined to bring him back.
Nearby, photographer Rocco Morabito witnessed the moment and captured the image that would be known as “The Kiss of Life.” It showed Thompson breathing hope into his friend — a portrait of courage, compassion, and humanity.
Miraculously, Champion survived. He was back at work the very next week. And Morabito’s photograph went on to win the Pulitzer Prize, becoming one of the most powerful images ever taken.
