On a June night

On a June night, 17-year-old Anthony Zhongor was sitting in his car when he saw another vehicle plunge off a dock and sink fast. Inside, a girl pounded desperately against the window.

Anthony didn’t hesitate. He tore off his clothes, dove into the dark water, and fought to save her. The doors wouldn’t open, so he shoved the nose of the car down, forcing the back end up. At last, the tailgate opened and 18-year-old Mia Samolinski scrambled free.

Together, they swam to safety. Shaking and crying, Mia whispered, “Oh my God, thank you.”

Just days later, Anthony graduated high school — and soon after signed up for the Marines. His recruiter said it best: “Zhongor’s selflessness and quick thinking really show the kind of person we look for to earn the title Marine.”
